I contacted the Hohner corporation through their customer service number on their website. The harmonica rep gave me a great heads up about the XB-40 harmonica.

First of all, the playing technique for this model is different, because of the design of the instrument. The reeds of this instrument are further away from the players lips. Whereas with a diatonic or chromatic harp, your lips are much closer to the reeds.

Second, since the reeds are further away from the players lips, they require more breath to make them vibrate. This extra breath makes the tone of the instrument richer, and the volume louder.

Third, most ten-hole diatonic harps sport only twenty reeds inside. This model, on the other hand, has forty reeds, which is twice the reeds of a normal ten-hole instrument.

Fourth, and best of all, each and every note bends on this model. Draw one out, bend it. Blow in for another, bend it.

And fifth, which is the personal one for me, I'm a lucky man. You see, I'm getting one of these for my 40th Birthday! I must mention I'm not getting the key of E, but the key of Low E, which is an octave lower!

Bottom line, if you want to bend notes easily, and have some fun doing it, forget your normal diatonic harp, and get your hands on an XB-40. Believe me, you'll thank yourself when you do.

There is a huge amount of Muddy Waters-compilations out there, and while MCA/Chess's two-disc, 50-track "Anthology 1947-1972" is certainly more definitive than this Geffen compilation, it does offer a very good overview of Muddy Waters' career.

Opening with the classic 1948 single "I Can't Be Satisfied", this CD takes you through (most of) the highlights from the 1950s and 60s. "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I'm Ready", "I Just Wanna Make Love To You", "Mannish Boy", and "Got My Mojo Working" are here, of course, and in the original versions, too, but it's a shame that some slightly lesser known (but equally fine) singles like "I Love The Life I Live, I Live The Life I Love", "She's Nineteen Years Old" and "I Want To Be Loved" are missing.

But there is certainly enough great music here to satisfy the casual fan, and if you do want more, there is always the impressive "Chess Box" and the late-70s/early-80s albums produced by Johnny Winter (only one track out of these 24 is from those sessions).

This album is not the definitive word on McKinley Morganfield, but it's a good introduction for the uninitiated.

This harp is ok to have as a spare, but I would not recommend using it to learn on. It just sits in my truck as a spare harp to mess with during lunch breaks and when I have to wait on someone. It is alright for this, but its prob better to invest another 10 dollars and get a nicer one. The Marine Bands from hohner are a favorite of mine and are perfect to learn on. Its ok for the price.

"sub par harp for the wrong price" 2010-01-26

I originally bought this harmonica at guitar center because I was missing a key of C harmonica to practice the bends in this book I had received. Since I didn't have a lot of money so I went with the honer "Big River Harp" instead of the honer "Hot metal" because I figured the ten dollar difference would result in a better harp. Unfortunately I was very disappointed in my purchase. For one it is not responsive which directly affects the tone and causes a very reedy and strained notes. Furthermore seeing as I got this to practice my bending I was disappointed in how difficult to produce good sounding bent notes. If you are buying this harmonica for yourself and or someone else or you are trying to cut a few corners pricewise opt for something else. The most decent "5 dollar" harp I've had was my Honer "blues band."

One of the tricks greedy MBA types like to pull on us poor consumers is to gradually lower the quality, and thus the production expense, of a product. Hence items such as hats, shirts, shoes, belts, autos, etc. are pathetic jokes when compared to their cousins of yesteryear.

Hohner is apparently on the same path. This harmonica is proof. One must hold it gently while playing to prevent bending the fragile case in and warping the reeds. Sound quality is okay but not exceptional by any means. Compared to my Special 20, a German-made product, this example of China-made mediocrity sounds like an angry mule caught in a brier bush. My advice: spend a few more bucks and get a harp worthy of the venerable Hohner name. This flimsy toy certainly isn't.

Seems to play fairly well. It's a bit "stiff(?)" with bending -- I find the Lee Oskar Diatonic and Hohner Special 20 are a bit easier to play and bend, but at higher cost. For a beginner on a budget, the Blues Bender is reasonable.

The Hohner Blues Bender Harmonica is made in China. However, it should not be compared to the cheap, less than $10, harmonicas made there. The reeds are very responsive, simlar to the Special 20 and Lee Oskar. The tone is closer to actual pitch, as opposed to the Special 20 that is a bit flat and bluesy, and the Lee Oskar that is tuned sharper and brighter. The comb is plastic and looks to be the same at the Special 20. The reeds appear slightly thicker and Hohner's website says they are. The cover has PAC stamped on it. The Hohner website says they are using "Patented Acoustic Covers" from the Marine Band Harmonica. Not exactly. The ends of the covers have openings like the Marine Band, but the back looks more like the Special 20 or Lee Oskar. The biggest difference is that the plates make the harmonica "sandwich" thicker, thicker even than the Lee Oskar, which I thought was thick. That means your lips tend to press on the cover plates, as opposed to, sliding more over and under them. For many, this will seem different, though it is not uncomfortable and some may end up liking it better. Notes are bendable, especially the #4 hole. Others take a bit more effort. I think the Special 20 is easier to bend, it is more like the Lee Oskar. Unlike the Big River, the Blues Bender's reed plates are recessed like the Special 20. One negative is the top and bottom cover plates look almost identical, so you have to pay attention to know which side is up. At this low price, I expect it will be very popular.

The Special 20 is available for about $30. It's made in Germany. I was interested in this Blues Bender for a short time, until a Hohner rep confirmed that it is made in China. Don't get me wrong, Hohner makes phenomenal instruments, but the quality of the Chinese harps just isn't the same. If you doubt what I am saying and have any experience with the Special 20, Marine Band 1896, or any other German-made Hohner harps, let us all know how the Chinese harp stacks up.

In general I like the other Chrometta harmonicas I have owned (the 8 hole model 250 and the 12 hole model 255) but the layout of this harmonica is odd. On most harmonicas (including other 10 hole chromatics I have had) the first note on the harmonica is the root note of the key of the harmonica. So, for example, if the instrument is in the key of C the first hole blow note is a C.

On this instrument the first hole starts in the middle of the scale(G). This can be a problem for players like myself who are use to the conventional layout of the instrument.

It has been my experience that this harp will go out of tune faster than the marine band. Everything has its specific use. This is a really good practice harp. I carry one with me everywhere I go. Bb is a good key for Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Junior Wells. Although this probably should not be your first harp. I would personally recommend an A harp but C is a good choice as well for a beginner.

Okay, I admit I don't have a Meisterklasse or some of the more expensive harmonicas, but after playing some of the more pricey Hohners (like the Special 20, which is nice, but it's honestly not as good as my Big River) I can say this is my favorite. I haven't noticed any problems yet with choked reeds. I don't bend my notes, which may be why I haven't heard rave reviews with this harp. And I do know that it's one of the cheapest harps, but I'd pay double the price for the service I do get outta' it.

I received my 64 Chromonica this afternoon. My mother brought it to me from my Aunt Dotty. It was previously owned by my Uncle Buddy. She also brought me a Koch Hohner harmonica from them also.

I have played and owned other harmonicas, but none like this one. This harmonica is the twenty-third and best harmonica in my arsenal. I love how the range extends down an octave below middle C.

When I played my Chromonica for the first time outside Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, and heard the low C for the first time, I was shocked and excited. The low C is the same pitch as the open C-String on the viola.

If you have the money for one of these, get yourself one. Chromatic harmonicas are the cream of the crop.

"Great tone and plays well!" 2010-01-09

First of all, I would describe myself as an intermediate harp player. I am not a pro by any means, but I have played enough to know the difference between a good harp and a lemon!

I got this harp a few weeks ago, and have been playing it pretty hard since then. The tone of this harmonica is really great, especially on the low holes. It has a deep resonating sound, and is easy to play the bottom three holes. I have not had a problem bending on this harp, and it has been a joy to play overall. This Harmonica is part of the Hohner MS series, so the reedplates can be replaced. The harp is easy to disassemble and reassemble.

I do not have any cons with this harmonica. I will probably buy more keys of this harp, but here are a couple things that other people might not like about it:

1. It has a wood comb, which can swell over time due to moisture

2. the cover doesn't match up to the edges of the reedplate exactly (maybe 1/32 inch off) and is kind of sharp on the side which can be uncomfortable for your lips

That's about it, I would highly recommend this harp!

"Sounds Good, but maybe not often" 2007-09-10

Within a couple weeks after I bought this harmonica, two of the reeds were stuck - not sounding at all. I love this harmonica - I am more or less a beginner, and loved being able to play things - like Greensleeves - which always missed a note because of the single sharp...or "If I were a rich man" which is loaded with accidentals, at least to my ear.

This harp allowed me to play anything - three full octaves, and a simple system - push the side button and everything goes up a semitone. All the notes were there. Reeds were within a couple hertz of their tuning.

Also, I have a mustache and beard, and the shell was fitted to the body so well that it never grabbed a hair. This matters to me. Occasionally I would get a hair grabbed when I hit the button - nothing can be done about that. But I bought some cheap harmonicas and could not play them at all.

But I would clean it like they said, tapping it on a towel, and it still would stick.

Hohner offered to clean it for me - all I had to do was mail it to them. Since it started sticking within a couple weeks of first ownership, I could not imagine mailing it to them every couple weeks.

What I have learned was that I could use distilled water. Distilled water and canned dusting air. Squirt it right in through the hole that led to the stuck reed, let it soak a little and then blow it out. Repeat. Sooner or later it would break loose. It would not play well that day but the next day it played fine after it dried out and got its tone back.

Well, the bottom couple notes still don't work right, but the mid range and the high range...I'd be happy to play The Star Spangled Banner on this harp. It sounds good - good enough that I've been practicing at Starbucks and gotten requests - and not "Far Far Away."

As long as their request isn't for a tune that has a reed that is stuck that day. And I have my bottle of distilled water and a syringe to squirt it into the right hole.

And if I was playing this harp professionally, I'd probably have to buy two or three to be sure I had one that worked.

I'm still learning. The 10 blow needed extra effort to sound; bending other notes takes some work. It's OK if you're honking through "Oh Susanna".

You can take it apart and adjust the reed gaps, but one cover screw was stripped & needed replacement.

If you really want to learn to play, you probably want to spend more & get something like a Hohner Special 20 or a Lee Oskar Major Diatonic.

I really like the 1950s curved design, it's much easier on the hands and it's very easy to take apart. My harp was silver instead of gold like in the picture, most people will be glad for this, as I was, because silver is of course the traditional color. The Hohner Marine Band is a more traditional design that tends to sell better but there are many ways in which this design is better; the airtight case makes it easier for beginners to learn and it also resists the grabbing of facial hair unlike some other models.

"Great Collection of Songs" 2009-12-12

Not necessarily a fan of Hal Leonard products per se. Still get some night sweats from them old accordion and piano book lessons I sat atop once upon a time. Nevertheless, this large blues harp collection is worth fighting off the spirits of those old ghosts.

For Beginners, would only recommend as a place or something to eventually strive for. Hopefully, with enough desire, practice and heart, you can/will get it up there one day too.

Intermediate & Advanced players will still have their challenges cut out and chops tested for them along the way also.

There are more than 60 songs (way too many to list here); each song in both music and tablature provides the artist as well as which key harp i.e. A, C, F, etc. they played and whether straight or cross harp was used.

The best way I'd recommend for everyone to learn any of this material is to hear it played several if not 10s or 100s of times more by the original artists. Yet while no discography is included, much of the original music can still be found. Additionally, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson comprise and make up at least half the selections in this book between them alone.

So in Little Walter's case, if you actually want to pay the current going rate of $70-150+ for his out-of-print "Essentials" - or even just download the songs at 99 cents a clip from iTunes whomever - by all means go for it.

For those on different budgets, Sonny Boy Williamson "His Best" and Little Walter "His Best" - each sold separately but on the Chess 50th Anniversary Collection CDs; and available new on Amazon or wherever - will cover the book's songs fairly well.

Blues Harmonica Collection isn't a blues harp lick book and isn't just a song book. And it isn't a harp tab book for playing the melody of songs. It's also not an instruction book. I have all these. "Blues Harmonica Collection" is different. It's a song book with the harp parts tabbed out in the appropriate places. If you've seen song books with the music tabbed out for guitar then this will look familiar. The difference is there's no guitar tab. The melody lines are written in regular music lines. So, what you may see is a couple bars of music (not tab) with the notation "guitar solo" as the intro, then two bars of melody line written in music notation (not tab) with the words underneath, then two bars of music with the harp tab underneath. Also, along with all of that, the chords are noted at the top like you'd expect to see in any music book. So, you can learn the song from intro to outro with the guitar chords, the harp licks and solos, and words. If you can play guitar and sing and play at least intermediate harp you'll love this book. If you have a friend or two to play with you'll love this book. If you want to learn just the harp parts for some great blues tunes, you'll love this book. I'll also be using it to help explain blues and blues structure to my (private) music students. If you're a beginner you probably wouldn't want to start with this book to learn on but you certainly would benefit from it by listening to the song by the original artist and following along in the book. You'll probably be able to get a mental picture of the song that will help when you're ready to attempt the songs. I would absolutely recommend this book to all levels. I'd even recommend the book to someone who only plays guitar and sings because the entire songs are there with the chords. I haven't had time to sit and play through the songs or learn the harp parts but based on sitting and looking through each page I'd have to say I would definately buy it again and I'd pay twice the price to get it. The other reviewers have very well said how great this book is so I won't repeat what they have written. It is amazing though that this is about the only book of harp tab available although given the fact that harp isn't as pop culture as guitar this probably makes sense. There's another book of tunes out by Glen Weiser (also on Amazon) that I haven't checked out and even though it only has about half as many tunes as this collection does I will probably eventually get it. Weiser also has a collection of fiddle tunes, Irish and American, for harmonica in tab form. After I got this Blues Harmonica Collection I also got the "His Best" collections of both Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter which have a good many of the songs contained in the book. It may be a good idea to have at least a C, D, and an A harp which will let you play along with about 15 or so songs in the book that are in these keys. There may be a good chance you already know a bit about harp and have a few of these keys so of course my "tips" here are maybe only for more novice players. (like myself!) A good choice of harp if you're getting started may be the Hohner Special 20 or the Lee Oskar. They were both about 20 bucks if you shop around a bit online although I recently saw the Oskars go up about an extra 5 bucks almost everywhere all at the same time! They are really nice harps though. Only other thing I might add is to also highly recommend the Rock n Blues Harmonica book by Jon Gindick and the Bluegrass Harmonica book by Mike Stevens.

The Lee Oskar harmonicas are very nice -- plastic combs are smoother and easier on the lips, and they have a smooth, resonant tone. This is essentially a standard Lee Oskar major diatonic harmonica in C -- identical in every way to the standard one, in fact -- except that it has gold-plated cover plates. It's very pretty and eye-catching. Even the screws are gold-colored. It also comes with a nice little velvet-lined box with a magnet that holds it closed. It would make a nice gift for anyone who plays harmonica or would like to play harmonica. The only question is whether you find it worthwhile to pay the price premium for harmonica that is functionally identical to the $25 model but prettier.

I was considering putting it in a box and trying to sell on eBay in ten years, but it's just too pretty _not_ to play.

I had an older Chrometta 8 which I played off and on for at least 20 years, also playing other harps in the meantime. I misplaced the old Chrometta 8 and just got a new one. It's more portable and comfortable than my other chromatics, more versatile than my diatonics. It looks so far like it might turn out to be as durable as my old Chrometta 8. I like the size and shape. I've played it a lot in the car, playing snippets of classical melodies and show tunes.

The limitations are, of course, the number of holes. That's not a serious limitation for someone starting out. Tone and volume and playability are comparable to any other "inexpensive" chromatic. Some reeds take a little more pressure than others, which is what I would expect. Admittedly I have not tried out any of the thousand-dollar-range chromatics. I have played larger chromatics and more expensive chromatics though, and for the price, I choose this one.

chromatics are very fragile,and once you recieve it, its yours, i do not much like the local music stores in my city, but i do visit them for certian items, and harmonicas are on the top of that list, i recieved this very harmonica from musicians friend,, and i have a really long history w them, still it had a blown reed, and they did not help me at all, in truth they tell you that upfront, but my stomach still turns everytime i look at that harp, i paid 89$ for a harp i never got one tune out of.

You would be very fortunate to get your hands on one of these. I've been looking for one on line and in stores since October. Finally, I found it here in December. It has a powerful and distinctive sound. The sound does come out of the bells. Very facinating and cool instrument.

I bought this for my father in law because it just looked too cool. Did not play it myself but listened to him play. I consider this more of a showpiece. Looks great, comes in a nice wooden case. Sound is not terribly distinctive to my ears. Your average experienced player could get a better tone from a stock Oskar or Hohner. Still, its a great looker and great addition to any collection.

"Nice Slick Covers" 2009-01-22

I hesitated before buying this harp because I was unsure of the covers. Rest assured they feel good on the lips and work very well.

Mine was airtight and responsive out of the box, with only a slight adjustment needed for one reed. Pretty good!

The corners are a bit sharp, but a touch of sanding takes the edge off that.

It comes in a very nice plastic box. It closes with a solid click and will not pop open accidently. It's also vented through the bottom. That's either good or bad, depending on how you look at things. On one hand, it allows air circulation, permitting the harp to dry out if put away damp. On the other hand, it will permit some crud to get in if you habitually carry it around in your pocket.

The Pro Harp is mid-range in Hohner's modular system series (MS series). It has a plastic comb and the dividers are comfortable. The reed plates are replaceable, and the harmonica is built so as to be easy to disassemble for maintenance. You'll need a posidrive #1 for the screws.

I work for a security company, and I often find myself in the middle of nowhere with nothing to look at and nobody to talk to. This makes falling asleep a serious risk, as in a risk to my employment and potentially a risk to the people and property I'm protecting. How do I avoid this problem? Playing my harmonica.

I bought this harmonica because my Grandfather played in a band, and I wanted to try to teach myself. It was en excellent choice, as it has a good sound, and was not expensive at all.

I got a Low F to add to my harmonici that I use at Church..

The Low F is a great addition. I still use the regular F (in cross position) to play in the key of C.

I love my Low F harmonica. I feel it complements the high G harmonica very well. The two are virtually the opposite extreme of each other.

I have sixteen harmonicas currently, with more in sight. I have all twelve diatonic key harmonicas. If you have the money, and a good case to store them in, I highly recommend acquiring a full set like mine.

The low F harmonica in its lowest register is rich and super warm. Blowing and drawing holes 1 through 3 on this instrument gives two warm rich chords. I compare the bottom F of this instrument to the bottom F of a concert accordion.
