"Hohner XB-40 -- Diatonic Harp Taken to the Extreme" 2009-05-20
By Edward Balen (Bradenton, Florida)
I contacted the Hohner corporation through their customer service number on their website. The harmonica rep gave me a great heads up about the XB-40 harmonica.

First of all, the playing technique for this model is different, because of the design of the instrument. The reeds of this instrument are further away from the players lips. Whereas with a diatonic or chromatic harp, your lips are much closer to the reeds.

Second, since the reeds are further away from the players lips, they require more breath to make them vibrate. This extra breath makes the tone of the instrument richer, and the volume louder.

Third, most ten-hole diatonic harps sport only twenty reeds inside. This model, on the other hand, has forty reeds, which is twice the reeds of a normal ten-hole instrument.

Fourth, and best of all, each and every note bends on this model. Draw one out, bend it. Blow in for another, bend it.

And fifth, which is the personal one for me, I'm a lucky man. You see, I'm getting one of these for my 40th Birthday! I must mention I'm not getting the key of E, but the key of Low E, which is an octave lower!

Bottom line, if you want to bend notes easily, and have some fun doing it, forget your normal diatonic harp, and get your hands on an XB-40. Believe me, you'll thank yourself when you do.

There was a farmer who had a dog and XB was his name oh, and he played an XB-40 harp, XB-40 harp, XB-40 harp and XB was his name oh

Golden Melody (#542) - Smooth, rounded corners fit nicely into the palm of your hand as you play this harmonica, the favorite of great harpists such as Pierre Lacocque (Mississippi Heat) and Carlos Del Junco. This unique design coupled with an air tight, dark red, plastic body sets this 10-hole instrument apart. The Golden Melody has equal temperament tuning for melody playing, which makes it a natural for Country Music, but it can still bring down the house on blues and rock numbers. All major keys available.

Hohner Blues Bender P.A.C. Harmonica, E

The new Blues Bender P.A.C. harmonica features Patented Acoustic Covers that are based on the design of the Marine Band Harmonica, which is the all-time favorite for serious harp players since 1896. The Blues Bender was designed primarily to make playing and note bending easy for entry level players. Originally patented by Jacob Hohner in 1897, the special shape of these covers increases the volume of air enclosed between the reeds and cover-plates which, when thrown into vibration and vented through the special side vents, allows for greater volume and projection. The Blues Bender P.A.C. features thicker than normal reed plates for a consistent tone. It is extremely airtight between the mouthpiece and the reed plates, allowing for easier note bending and making expressive playing easier. The Blues Bender P.A.C. allows everybody access to the bluesy notes needed to make any riff complete.

Music that bring back history lessons from conversations over heard by our parents. Some of the sounds bring back memories of listening to the radio during the 50's and 60's or listening to our parents talk about music with their friends or remembering them having friends over for card parties and dancing.

"Not quite definitive, but some great, great music here" 2007-12-12
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae)
There is a huge amount of Muddy Waters-compilations out there, and while MCA/Chess's two-disc, 50-track "Anthology 1947-1972" is certainly more definitive than this Geffen compilation, it does offer a very good overview of Muddy Waters' career.

Opening with the classic 1948 single "I Can't Be Satisfied", this CD takes you through (most of) the highlights from the 1950s and 60s. "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I'm Ready", "I Just Wanna Make Love To You", "Mannish Boy", and "Got My Mojo Working" are here, of course, and in the original versions, too, but it's a shame that some slightly lesser known (but equally fine) singles like "I Love The Life I Live, I Live The Life I Love", "She's Nineteen Years Old" and "I Want To Be Loved" are missing.

But there is certainly enough great music here to satisfy the casual fan, and if you do want more, there is always the impressive "Chess Box" and the late-70s/early-80s albums produced by Johnny Winter (only one track out of these 24 is from those sessions).

This album is not the definitive word on McKinley Morganfield, but it's a good introduction for the uninitiated.

Hohner's diatonic harmonicas set the industry standard through their high quality construction, excellent response and unsurpassed tone. Often called "Blues Harps", they have been a fixture as melody and accompaniment instruments in blues, rock, country, and folk bands, as well as many other styles of music and musical ensembles. Richter tuning and undivided air channels allow for bending and overblowing the reeds, creating the signature wailing sound typical of the harmonica.
